如Windows Media Services for Windows Server 2008所講的，自Windows2008已經不包含串流處理媒體的服務，必須另外安裝套件。

而更重要的是Windows Media Services不再提供支援Windows 2012。

在Windows Server中取而代之的是 IIS Media Services

此軟體是 Windows Server 2008 的選用增補元件。在 Windows Server 2008 中，「伺服器管理員」不包含「串流處理媒體服務」角色 (其中包括最新的 Windows Media Services 版本) 與遠端管理工具。如果要取得適用於 Windows Server 2008 之 Windows Media Services 的新功能與可用工具 (例如，內建的 WMS 快取/Proxy 外掛程式)，您必須取得適當的「串流處理媒體服務」角色安裝程式檔案並在更新的平台上執行。

* 在 Windows Server 2008 Standard 與 Enterprise 版本的「完整」安裝上，會安裝 Windows Media Services 與「伺服器管理員」中剩餘的「串流處理媒體服務」角色
* 在 Windows Server 2008 Standard 與 Enterprise 版本的 "Server Core" 安裝上，會安裝「串流處理媒體服務 Server Core」角色
* 在執行 Microsoft Windows Vista Business、Enterprise 或 Ultimate 版本作業系統的電腦上，會安裝適用於 Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 的 Windows Media Services 嵌入式管理單元
